Why Do I Only Take Action Under Pressure?

For years, I performed best under pressure. I pushed my limits over and over to get through difficult situations, feeling completely exhausted afterwards and afraid that the situation would happen again.
When an exam was coming up, I was able to focus best. When money became tight, I worked harder. When circumstances became difficult, I found a solution. When there was no other option, I took action.
And because I repeatedly proved that I could perform under pressure, my system started associating pressure with safety.
Pressure meant: Now I know I will do something.
Today, a brilliant coach questioned this deeply rooted belief.
Why do I need fear and pressure to trust that I will take action?
Why can’t I simply trust myself?
If something requires my attention, I can take responsibility and act. If it doesn’t require action right now, I don’t need to create inner restlessness to feel in control.
That led me to another insight.
I often say that I trust the flow of Life. Yet today I understood what that actually means to me.
Trusting Life doesn’t mean giving someone else the steering wheel.
Life presents me with circumstances, opportunities, challenges, changes and periods where nothing seems to move.
My responsibility is to respond to what is actually in front of me.
I don’t need fear to drive me.
I don’t need pressure to make me responsible.
I can take action because I trust myself to know when action is needed.
Exercise 1: When You Feel Pressure
Next time You feel pressure building, ask Yourself:
What actually requires my attention right now?
Then take responsibility for that one thing without using fear to push Yourself forward.
If You feel restless or anxious, stop what You are doing. Sit down for ten minutes and set a timer. Let the feeling be there without judging it, fighting it, or trying to change it. Simply allow it to move through Your body.
Then continue with what actually needs Your attention.
Exercise 2: Remember How It Feels Without Pressure
Think of a situation where You took action without needing pressure.
You simply did what needed to be done.
What drove You? Excitement? Motivation? A sense of responsibility? Or did You simply not question it and take action?
Remember the situation as clearly as You can. Especially remember how it felt to act without fear pushing You.
Now imagine approaching Your current challenge from that same place.
No pressure. No fear needed to force You into action.
You simply take responsibility and do what is required.
Without pressure, You create space for creativity. Instead of narrowing Your focus to one way out, Your mind can see more possibilities and find solutions You may have missed under pressure.
Imagine Yourself accomplishing what needs to be done this way and stay with that feeling for a moment.
Remind Yourself:
I don’t need pressure to perform.
I perform when required.
I take responsibility for myself.
Life presents the road.
You keep Your hands on the steering wheel.
